Story

Lucio Luque is Peruvian coffee brought in by the Bean Brothers team through an American green coffee company called Red Fox. Red Fox is also a company we truly enjoy working with as it has a good philosophy on green bean sourcing that sets it apart from other companies. While preparing for the launch of this coffee, we spoke with the Red Fox team about coffee, and the most impressive thing was their journey to discovering the coffee producing region of Inkawasi.

Inkawasi is a coffee producing region located in the Cusco region of southern Peru. Machu Picchu, the ruins of the Inca Empire, is nearby. It is a rugged place with an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, so transportation is inconvenient and communication with the outside is not easy.

When Red Fox's founder, Aleco, first knocked on the door of the city of Inca, he was met with resistance from the co-operative that was managing the area at the time. Red Fox's way of providing education and facilities to local farmers and paying a fair price for green beans was not accepted by those leading the cooperative. Were they concerned that Red Fox's influence would become too strong in the area?

The relationship between Red Fox and Inkawasi begins only when existing cooperatives are disbanded and new ones emerge. A green coffee company with an exemplary sourcing philosophy and Claudio Ortiz, a cooperative leader with outstanding leadership, met, and the Inkawasi region developed into a coffee producing region that supplies coffee to the world. It is of no coincidence that Lucio Luque, a member of the co-operative, finished second in the 2019 Cup of Excellence.

There are more factors than you thought before coffee leaves the production area and arrives at the roastery. Usually producers and roasters stand out, but there are a lot of people who play an important role in between. More often than not, you will find interesting stories in them.
