Coffee Story

Located about 120km north of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, Turkanah Lake boasts breathtakingly serene natural scenery of the Great Rift Valley, stretching from the Tanzanian border. The valley floor is wide and fertile, filled with natural wonders such as volcanic lakes, swamps, and dramatic cliffs to the east and west. The Teremuka processing plant is located at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley in Nakuru County.

The history of Kenyan coffee dates back to the early 19th century when British missionaries introduced Bourbon coffee trees. As the value of cash crops rose in the European market, the British prohibited coffee production outside their colonial territories, and coffee cultivation was not allowed for Kenyans. In 1963, with Kenya's independence, large tracts of land, up to 110 hectares, were converted into large-scale cooperatives consisting of over 1,000 families living around the Rift Valley.

Harvesting is done manually according to the same standards for harvesting and classification as in the central counties of Kenya. After washing and pulping using the Olabaniata River water on the day of harvesting, the coffee is left in water tanks for 48-72 hours before being dried in the sun for 10-15 days.

The coffee has a rich and dense sweetness reminiscent of dried orange, passion fruit, and dark brown honey. It would pair well with the colors of autumn.

What is the best consumed date for coffee beans? Are your coffee beans freshly-roasted?

We recommend 7-21 days after the initial roasting date to allow for degassing to take place, allowing the flavour of the coffee compounds to be properly extracted. Within the first seven days, roasted coffee beans are still releasing carbon dioxide and degassing. If not degassed properly, it will hinder the extraction of ground coffee particles during the brewing process.

What are the differences between Single Origins and Blends?

Single origin beans are harvested from a single producer, crop, or region, usually delivering a taste profile that is unique to its origins. Blends are a mixture of a few single origin beans, producing a rich and expressive flavor profile.

How do I choose coffee that is suitable for me?

Find the right tasting notes. These are often identified by our barista during cupping sessions. Some coffee are more floral and fruity while some are more chocolaty and nutty. As you drink more coffee, you will figure out which notes you would like the most.
