Story

Although Caturra occupies an important place in the history of coffee varieties, it has not received as much attention. Rather than being treated as a single breed, it is often mixed with other breeds such as Catuai, and it may be because the original breed is not as strong as Geisha. However, anyone interested in coffee varieties needs to try and know more about Caturra alone at least once.

First discovered in Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century, Caturra attracted the attention of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Institute (IAC) because of its small size. It is also known that the etymology of the word 'Katura' is the word 'small' in the Aboriginal language. Why were researchers interested in the small size of the Caturra tree? Because the smaller size means more coffee per unit area. It means that it is an economical variety.

Although Caturra was discovered and developed in Brazil, it is said that it was not cultivated much in Brazil. After the seeds were brought to Guatemala in the 1940's, they spread to several Central American countries, eventually becoming one of Central America's leading coffee varietal. It is economical and has decent cup quality, so it is sometimes used as a benchmark when developing new varietal in research labs, and has become the parent variety of coffee rust-resistant varieties such as Castillo and Catimor.

The El Jocote introduced this time is a rare opportunity to enjoy Caturra as a single breed. Naturally processed, it has a good fruity flavor, and it also has high-quality cacao notes that can be felt when the coffee is properly fermented. It has been about a hundred years since Caturra first appeared in the world, but it might be a fun way to enjoy this coffee by thinking about the journey from Brazil to Costa Rica to meeting you.
